Different animals spend
their winters in different ways. Some travel long distances to find warmer
weather. Others stay in cold places but grow thicker fur or feathers. These
thicker coats help keep them warm. A few hibernate, or sleep, through the
winter.
Geese and bats move to
warmer areas when winter comes. Whales also move to warmer places in the cold
season. On the other hand, the weasel stays where it lives all year long. The
weasel grows a heavier coat. It even grows different colored coat. In the
summer a weasel’s fur is brown. However, in the winter its coat turns white.
The white coat helps the weasel hide in the snow.
Animals that hibernate
sleep a lot during the winter. Some sleep all the time, while others, like the
rabbit and squirrel, just sleep through the coldest times. Hibernating animals
use less energy than animal that are awake.
